ABOUT BIENNALE AND ITS THEME
It was originated long time ago, in 2010,in Venice ,and it exhibits art. Having got inspired by the biennale in Venice, we thought of starting it here too. This is the third edition of Kochi biennale and it has been very successful till now. When talking about its theme it all the curator’s freedom. The curator of first biennale was Riyas Komu.In 2014 it was Jitish Kallat. This year it is Sudarshan Shetty an artist by himself and he was unanimously selected by the committee.
Kochi is a cosmopolitan city. More than 33 different communities live in Kochi and speak almost 16 languages and all these people live in a very small area. Kochi is socially a very interesting place .This land not only brought business through trade, but also brought different kinds of religion ,culture , language and ideas. As we know that religion is one of the most dangerous weapon and everyone is obsessed with certain kinds of religion ,Kochi is protected with different kinds of religion with openness and diversity. So we thought Kochi would be ideal to host biennale.
RESPONSE FROM ARTISTS AROUND THE WORLD
The different varieties of art works that are being exhibited here are the responses of artists from all over the world. And it is our responsibility to exhibit them for the people .It is incredible to see different kinds of thinking implemented into this project .Raul Zurita’s installation is a good example of how art can be experienced.
MESSAGE TO THE WORLD THROUGH THIS BIENNALE
I wanted to tell the whole world ,see ,view, love ,live. Life itself is an art. See all kinds of art and learn from it. Now Kochi has got a wonderful opportunity ,we have lots of international artists here. When I was a child, I never got such an opportunity to see contemporary art. So explore to the maximum.
